Hurricane Matthew Update
Great thanks to our many supporters!
Alongside the extensive re-building that is required in parts of Haiti, the danger of a cholera resurgence is real and should be a priority concern for health institutions. Cholera has claimed many thousands of lives since the 2010 earthquake so we are taking this threat seriously and focusing our relief efforts on minimizing the spread of this disease.
Your donations have already helped us to work in partnership with St Boniface Haiti Foundation to tackle cholera on two fronts – prevention and treatment. Community teams are working to monitor water cleanliness in the region, identifying communities at most risk and responding quickly to improve access to safe water sources. Another important aspect of the work is to educate communities on how to reduce their exposure to the disease.
We know not all cases can be prevented so we are supporting the development of a cholera treatment center at the St Boniface site. This center will receive referrals from the community team and act as the main center for cholera treatment in the region. Although we expect a significant peak in cases at the treatment center, the mobilization of resources in the community is key to tackling potential outbreaks.
Thanks to your generous support through this challenging time, we expect to help over 10,000 people as part of the cholera prevention and treatment work over the next 6 months. Without this work the loss of life from this horrible disease could eclipse those lost during the hurricane itself. We are so thankful to all those who have been following developments and praying for positive news. If you’d still like to donate then please do. We still need more funds to ensure the project can be sustained for 6 months. Keep following our news page for updates as the work develops.
