Maison de Benediction (House of Blessings) opened in 2009 responding to the need of support for children with disabilities, their families and caregivers. In Haiti almost 10% of the population have a disability, yet there is almost no support or social care available; in fact the common term often used for disabled people is ‘worthless’. Children with disabilities may be abandoned as their families, already living in poverty, become overwhelmed by the burden. So…we put the family at the center of our work. We seek to empower them to care for their children, and engage with communities; allowing us to make a big difference, while concurrently changing attitudes towards disability.
About 40 children currently benefit from individual health care, physiotherapy and nutrition programs, responding to their specific needs at Maison de Benediction, as well as joining in music, crafts, sports and other activities to enhance their quality of life and learning opportunities. To enable families to include and care for their children with disabilities at home in their local communities, Maison de Benediction also has a Community team which support an additional 60 families.
We invite you to partner with us in this valuable and life changing work with some of the poorest communities in the North region of Haiti. By taking part in our Child Sponsorship program with a monthly gift of $25US, you will receive updates and pictures on a child selected for you, establishing a personal link and sharing in their development. (Please note, children may have more than one sponsor, and funds are pooled to benefit all children based on individual needs).
